Why Say “Happy Deepavali” Instead of “Happy Diwali”?

In Malaysia, Hari Deepavali is the name commonly used in official holiday listings, making “Happy Deepavali” a familiar local greeting. Deepavali means “a row of lights,” in Sanskrit while Diwali is another name for the same festival and is more commonly used in northern India. Both greetings are correct, but when celebrating in Malaysia, “Happy Deepavali” feels especially at home.

A meaningful Deepavali message doesn’t need to be long. Add the person’s name, mention a memory you share or include a warm wish for their family. For someone you don’t know well, keep it simple and sincere. For a close friend or relative, a personal note can make the greeting feel especially heartfelt.
