ML x AC (pronounced “Melinda Looi and Amber Chia”, or “ML and AC”) is Malaysian fashion’s most exciting collaboration this Chinese New Year.
Jointly designed by accomplished fashion designer Melinda Looi and top celebrity model Amber Chia, the collection, titled 緣Yuán: The Beauty of Serendipity, was inspired by the Chinese concept of yuán (缘), described as “the "binding force" that links two persons together in any relationship”. In English, the word yuan is most closely translated to serendipity, which also means “finding something good without looking for it”.
“When people think of Chinese New Year, they usually associate it with wealth, health, and prosperity. However, we tend to forget that good fortune could also mean the abundance of wonderful people in our lives; hence we developed a collection that celebrates the beauty of friends and relationships,” said Melinda.
It is also yuán that brought Melinda and Amber together. The duo, who are now considered industry veterans, have known each other since the early stages of their respective careers in the fashion industry in year 2000.
“Amber and I have known each other for so long, but we never got a chance to truly work together closely, so we thought, “What better occasion than Chinese New Year?” After all, it is a time of togetherness with friends and family,” said Melinda.
Amber agreed, stating, “I truly believe that fate has brought us together for this collaboration! I have always wanted to be involved with fashion designing, and to have a partner in a designer as acclaimed as Melinda for this collection is really like a Chinese New Year dream came true for me!”
The collection combines bright, auspicious colours with a variety of fabrics and textures to represent the many faces and personalities of people that touch our lives.
Yuán: The Beauty of Serendipity is a collection that goes beyond typical Chinese New Year offerings. Melinda and Amber designed the collection with the lifestyle of modern day ladies in mind.
“Today’s women are looking for pieces that can be mixed and matched with existing items in their wardrobes,” said Amber.
Evidence of such versatility can be seen in pieces such as the Jacquard Vest and Jacquard Skinny Pants (sold separately) - a unique and unexpected menswear inspired twist on Chinese New Year apparel. The vest and pants can be worn conventionally as a set, or separately with basic pieces in one’s existing wardrobe (anything from slouchy t-shirts and shorts to button-down blouses and skinny jeans).
The Jacquard Panel Dress with Chinese Buttons is expected to be a hit among the office crowd. Its simple sheath silhouette in fuchsia and electric blue is dressed up with contrasting satin brocade panels, finished with Chinese knot buttons and an unexpected scalloped hem, resulting in a look that’s boardroom friendly, yet festively appropriate.
Also noteworthy is ML x AC’s 100% cotton polo tees and dresses, promising stylish fun for the entire family without sacrificing on comfort. Shoppers looking for modern Chinese New Year basics for the entire family will delight in the collection’s interesting Oriental touches such as modified Mandarin collars, embroidered motifs, and bright, eye-catching colours. The matching women’s and little girl’s Embroidered Polo Dress with Uneven Hem are especially adorable, as are the Polo Tee with Chinese Buttons for men and little boys.
The ML x AC collection is now available at Zalora, retailing from RM138 onwards for dresses and separates, and RM68 onwards for the Polo collection.

Having lived in Melbourne, I was, and continue to be inspired by how well Melbournian men are dressed – be it street style or dapper eveningwear.
I am proud to say I have no fashion regrets because I only wear the things I really like.
This year, I’ll be wearing more coloured chino shorts. Shorts that add a pop of colour not only look great, but also keep you cool in the perpetual summer that is Singapore!
The trend I loved in 2013 was 'boots with suits‘. The look is the ultimate combination of style and class, and a real classic look.
I regret wearing flip flops with jeans too often and will (try to) stay away from this look this year. Yes, it’s comfortable, but it is also lazy, shabby and mismatched at times!
This year, I will try to wear more colours. I plan to replace the jeans and flip flops combo with shorts and loafers.
The look I loved in 2013 was ‘The Great Gatsby’ Look. Nothing brought a soaring economy and great style into a larger party than a flashback of the roaring twenties!
I regret wearing sweat pants and plain t-shirts and will not wear them this year. Remember, you are what you wear.
In 2014, I will try to wear a bright bow tie as often as I can.
The trend I loved in 2013 was bright casual loafers because of how they make a serious outfit stand out.
I regret wearing too many plain, dark polo shirts last year, and will try to not wear them so much this year, especially as so many cool prints are on trend this season.
As I normally stick to quite simple, classic shirts, this year, I am going to find a way to wear floral prints!
